How Can I Help You?

I offer counselling and psychotherapy and will tailor my approach to your needs as these will be unique to you. At our first meeting we will look at your requirements and discuss the most beneficial way forward for you.

What is the difference between psychotherapy and counselling?

The labels used in personal therapy vary and can be confusing. There is a degree of overlap but in general terms it is about the length and depth of therapy.

Counselling can be shorter term and can help in the resolution of a specific issue or immediate crisis that you may have such as a relationship difficulty, bereavement or work issue in a safe, supportive environment. Together we can work towards helping you to become aware of feelings, thoughts and patterns of behaviour that are unhelpful and discover other options. You can explore new skills and ways to resolve problems and develop better ways of relating and communicating.

Psychotherapy is a safe, therapeutic relationship in which we can explore what is happening for you currently and understand how your past experiences are affecting your present. An example could be "Why do I keep choosing the wrong partner?". It is collaborative work between the two of us which seeks to increase your capacity for self awareness and choice. By exploring ideas together and being curious about your behaviour and what lies behind it, the process of psychotherapy can help you to resolve and leave behind unhelpful patterns of behaviour in order to move towards a more satisfying and fulfilling future.

Whilst both approaches aim to explore and resolve emotional difficulty, psychotherapy usually goes into longer held and deeper rooted issues.
